001 | Action/Accidental Video

[So, being rained on in the woods makes it pretty clear she's not on the Watchtower anymore. There's a few possibilities: she remembers flying back with the force of Fate rejecting her spell, so maybe she hit her head. Or maybe it's some illusion caused by the rebound. A very real illusion, as she can feel her whole body ache as she sits up. But there's no way she's not hallucinating this.]

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in outer space anymore. [She mumbles the words to herself, unaware that anyone might be listening. The journal has gone beyond notice, though it's been silently broadcasting the scene since a minute or so before Zatana woke. Thankfully she's close enough to a tree that the rain falling on her is light enough to not be too much of a concern. Instead her eyes have wandered downward, taking in her change of clothing with a frown.]

Oh you've got to be kidding me. [Zatanna tugs at the collar of the dress she wears, clearly displeased by the slip.] Yeah, this has to go. Emit ot egnahc sehtolc!

[She lifts her hands over her head as she speaks the words, and seconds later a cloud of smoke flows up the same path to cover Zatanna completely. It doesn't last long, vanishing within moments to reveal the girl now wearing an outfit better suited for a magician. For some reason though, it makes the pain in her back worse, and her jacket feels far too tight. She shifts where she sits for a moment before shrugging off the outermost layer to reveal a pair of grey wings.]

What in the--?! [Zatanna gasps, eyes wide as she takes in the sight of the appendages now attached to her. Actually attached; they move when she thinks of moving them, and she feels it when she touches them.] Great. A fake world with bad taste in clothing and accessories. Just what I needed.

[She takes another look at the jacket, slowly shaking her head.] At least I've still got my magic. Dda seloh rof sgniw! [After another cloud puff, this only only around the jacket, she slides the coat back on--gingerly, since the wings still hurt.

She makes her way to her feet then, determined to find out what's going on. Hopefully exploring will give her the answers she needs to get back. If she's lucky, maybe she'd wake up and find out there could still be a chance to thwart Fate.

The only place she ends up, however, is in Luceti proper. With the advice of a few good samaritans in mind, Zatanna changes into something a little less battling-bad-guys ready using the same method as before. Not that the rain makes exploring easy, but there's not really much avoiding it. Luckily summoning an umbrella is easy enough to do, and gives her adequate cover as she wanders pretty much everywhere public, just trying to get some idea for where she is.]

[He kind of feels bad for staring, just a little. But it doesn't count if it's the journals, right? Yeah, he's just gonna say it doesn't.]

Zatanna's still getting used to the idea of a book that can talk, although she's managed to find it by now. She shakes her head slowly, staring down at the journal in her hands.]

Thanks. It's actually pretty easy once you know what you're doing.

I bet, but stuff like that ain't the kind of thing you just learn.

[At least, not usually. But if it is, sign him right up—]

Actually, it is. But it takes practice, and you have to have an affinity for sorcery and magic. Which I'm guessing you've never seen for real before?

Not like that. I mean, I've been here for a while now, and I've seen all sorts of neat things, but it's always something different. It's like no two spells are the same.

Kinda keeps it interesting.

That's not really all that unusual. Different people can even do the same spells differently.

So magic is a thing around here? That's good to know. [Although she's already gotten a hint of it from the book in her hands.]

If you've been here awhile, you'll be able to give me a better idea of what's going on. For starters, where is here, exactly?

Yep, sure is. Apparently, there's even magic here that anyone can learn. I've never tried it myself, but I hear it can be pretty useful.

[Her question makes him realize that he kinda sorta forgot that whole part where she's new here, though. He should apologize.]

Whoops. Sorry about that. I guess I kinda got carried away. [There's still a bit of a smirk in his voice when he says it.] This place is called Luceti. No one knows where it is, exactly, but if there's one thing we do know? It's an entirely different world.

Really? Anyone at all? [Now that's new. Back home people at least have to have an affinity for it.

Oh, but now she's getting some answers. That's a definite plus...even if the answers sound a little crazy.]

You mean a different planet, like Mars or something? Because last I checked, a little space travel usually doesn't end up with wings.

Anyone at all. I don't know a whole lot about magic, but that doesn't seem to be normal where most people come from. Then again, it's not the weirdest thing to ever happen here, either.

[He's just tallying up the number of weird experiments that have happened since he got here, to be honest.]

Kind of like that, yeah, except with a lot more life on it. But I don't think that's what gave us the wings.

Not where I’m from either. Not everyone is born with an affinity for it. [Then most people can’t simply because they don’t believe in it and would never realize they had the potential. It’s pretty strange to think that learning magic is open to all here—and that this guy doesn’t think it’s the oddest thing he’s come across.] Should I ask what ranks at the top?

I don’t know; there are some pretty lively planets out there. [At least from what Zatanna’s heard; space travel isn’t exactly one experience she’s had.] Okay, so what did?

The Malnosso. They didn't bring us to this world, but they did bring us to this village. Apparently, we need the wings to survive here.

I think the wings are pretty weird, though. Or just about any one of the experiments. I think they keep getting weirder and weirder, to tell the truth.

…I’m not quite seeing how wings are suddenly a vital organ. [But she keeps the name in mind: Malnosso. Jason says “they,” so it’s probably a group or an organization of some sort. And of course, Zatanna is completely alone. Great.] So why here? And why us?

I’m not disagreeing with you there. [The wings rank as weird, but the tidbit he drops next? That falls closer to disturbing.] Experiments? What sort of experiments?

Hey, don't ask me. I'm not a doctor. Or a mad scientist. I don't know what's so special about us, either. It seems like the people that get dragged here are completely random, which sounds unbelievable, but it seems to be true.

[He's pretty sure Bruce would never settle for that, but if even he couldn't figure it out...]

Those guys I mentioned, the Malnosso? They run those experiments. It's usually nothing dangerous, though—just weird stuff, like making people fall in love with each other or act like characters from bad TV shows.

Yeah, I can’t say I was getting a Doogie Howser vibe off of you. [The joke is mostly for her own benefit; to hear that all of this is supposedly random is pretty freaky. If someone’s in charge and controlling the process, then in theory they can also be stopped.

But something completely chaotic? Not exactly Zatanna’s favorite thing to go up against.]

Wow, really? [Okay, so that’s not what Zatanna had in mind when the idea of human experiments first came up. But hey, it sounds better than having someone cut into her or something.] Still, I’m pretty sure everyone would rather avoid the whole experience all together. So let me guess…there’s no way to do it?

I'll take that as a compliment. [He is a Bad Boy and proud of it, okay. But he seems amused by her joke nonetheless.] That'd be too easy, right? You pretty much have to just hope luck is on your side and you'll get skipped. There's no way to know if you'll be affected or not.

Sweet and innocent boy genius can be overrated. [Zatanna likes people with a more fun side, provided they can walk the line without falling into evil jerk territory.]

Great. It sounds like there's a Lord of Chaos running the show. [And she's not so much a fan of them.] They wouldn't happen to have a guy named Klarion on their side, would they?

Tell me about it. I mean, what's fun about that?

[You know, he thinks he likes this girl already. Being the chattier, friendlier Robin in Luceti at the moment, he can definitely appreciate a good joke.]

I don't think so. [Given the specificity of the question, he can't help but ask...] A big bad where you're from?

Slowly corrupting them so they start to enjoy life more? [Yeah, Zatanna's definitely feeling whelmed by Jason, which is a good thing for those who don't know Robin speak.] But not actually turning them evil. Given that my dad's in the Justice League and I'm on a crime-fighting team of teenage superheroes? Evil is definitely a thing to avoid.

[Which might help give some extra weight to her answer.] You got it in one. Klarion is a Lord of Chaos, who really doesn't care if people get hurt, or worse. A couple of months ago, he and a bunch of old magicians and wizards actually split the world into two dimensions: one with only Earth's children, and one with only the adults.

[There's plenty of things Jason could say in response, but he's completely caught by surprise when she mentions the "j" word.]

[The teenage superhero thing isn't so surprising thanks to her little magic display, but. Wow. Definitely not what he was expecting.]

[Even if it was as Doctor Fate now, instead of Zatara.]

[He figures the "technically" part is what's making this complicated. She's not a Titan that he knows of, though... unless a future Titan, maybe?

But there's something familiar about her, too, now that he thinks about it. What could it be...?]

Zatara. [She hesitates, then lets out a quiet sigh.] Although these days, he's going by Doctor Fate.

[And Zatanna is clearly not at all happy about that fact.]

For real? [He recognizes the names, but there's still something odd about—

...wait a second. After a pause, he asks:] Are you supposed to be Zatanna?

Not just supposed to be. [Although most people haven't really heard of her, so now she's getting curious too.] Who are you?

I, uh... Sorry. I always thought you'd be older.

[He'd never actually met her, but who didn't know of Zatanna? Still, though. He's pretty sure she's older.]

Me? Just a kid from Gotham. [He'd be more specific, but there's something he wants to be sure of first.] You wouldn't happen to know someone named Artemis, would you?

[He's pretty sure the answer is yes. All of this would make a lot more sense that way.]
