[Having run into Artemis the other day between her missions has left Jason concerned. While he may not be quite as diligent about his "work" (which he is pretty sure is nonexistent here anyway, no matter what Dick says), there are some things he thinks a whole lot about—things like, say, the well-being of others.

It's been a few days since then, but since the missioning doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon, Jason decides to ask Zatanna about it. Dressed in a red hoodie (purely coincidence) and jeans, he crosses the hall and knocks on her door.]

Hey, Zatanna? You around?

[Unlike certain other people who live on this floor, Zatanna actually answers her door when she hears knocking. She smiles to see Jason there, pretty glad to have the company. The apartment's been too quiet with Artemis gone.]

Hey, Jason. Come in. [She's dressed pretty simply herself, just a tank top and capris, another card carrying member of the "do not work twenty-four/seven" club.] What's up?

[He's more than happy to accept the invitation! He returns the smile as he steps into the apartment.]

Oh, not much. I was just wondering how you were doing. Artemis has been acting kind of weird lately.

You noticed that too? [She’s just gotten the door closed when Jason asks about Artemis. Well, technically Zatanna too, but she’s not really so eager to talk about how she’s doing between Artemis blowing her off and Robin being…Robin.] It was like she couldn’t get out of here fast enough last time she came back. She was off on another mission the same day.

Yeah... [He frowns a little.] I figured something might be troubling her, but I didn't wanna bother her about it. You have any idea what it could be?

[If anyone might know what was wrong with her, after all, it was probably Zatanna. She'd known her longer than he did, for sure.]

I'm not really sure. [Zatanna shook her head slowly, thinking over her all too brief conversation with the girl.] She tried to say she just wanted to train, but I think that it’s more than that. I don’t know if something happened while we were all possessed, but she’s definitely not acting like herself.

I guess it wouldn't surprise me if something happened during the possessions. [He'd been pretty lucky compared to others, sure, but even he had a few issues with what they had done to them.] Think she'll ever talk about it? Something like that can't be good to keep all bottled up.

[The irony of what he says is far from lost on him, but it was different when it was a friend, when it was someone you wanted to help.]

Considering how no one was acting like themselves? Definitely not. [And oh hey, speaking of bottling things up, who isn’t pointing out that she made out with Robin right now even if it’s a really good example? This girl. Zatanna’s pretty happy to not talk about that mess—and she knows Artemis well enough to think she’ll feel the same about whatever’s happened to her.]

I don’t know. She…kind of had this big secret back home. [One that isn’t Zatanna’s to tell, but she can at least talk about what happened, right?] It took her a long time to actually talk about it with the team. Months. I don’t know if this is going to turn out to be something like that.

[It's okay, Zee, he already knows about that— But he also knows better than to bring up something like that, too. (Unless we're talking about trolling Dick, of course. Because Jason has no rules about trolling Dick.)]

I hope not. I mean, I get it. Everyone's got things they don't wanna talk about. But if there's something we could do to help, I'd like to do it, you know?

[Unfortunately trolling Dick is going to have to wait for another time. Figuring out what’s going on with her closest friend is more important.]

Yeah, definitely. She said she wanted to get some training in. Maybe when she gets back she’ll feel better.

Hopefully. [But if he was feeling helpless about this, he was sure Zatanna was, too. He decides he'll try and focus on what he can help. He smiles, trying to be encouraging.] I guess for now, we just have to hope for the best.

[Helpless is definitely the way to describe it. Zatanna nods, although she kind of hates having to agree to basically do nothing. She really can't manage a smile of her own.]

I guess so.

She seems like a pretty strong girl, you know? Whatever it is, I'm sure she'll pull through it. [Optimism, optimism! Jason didn't think he was the best at it, all things considered, but he had to try.] Anyway, sorry about all this. I know it probably doesn't count for much, but if you need anything, I'm here. We all are.

Yeah, I'm sure she will. [That does get her to grin, at least a little. Artemis is someone Zatanna respects and admires on top of being friends with. She'd be okay.]

Hey, you don't have to apologize. It really helps knowing that there are people you can count on, you know?

Yeah. We all need friends. Especially in a place like this. We've gotta stick together.

[...even if friends also had a habit of making things complicated sometimes, whoops. Still, it was definitely better to stick together.]

I guess I should get going, then. I'll keep an eye out for Artemis whenever she gets back.
