Name: Zatanna Zatara
Canon: Young Justice
Canon Point: The End of 1x26 (Auld Acquaintance)
Age: 14

History: Zatanna at the Young Justice Wiki

Personality: Considering that her father is a superhero and a powerful magician, Zatanna is actually a pretty normal teenager. When she's first introduced, her biggest complaints in life revolve around the fact that Zatara tends to be overbearing and too protective of her. From what we see, Zatara is a single father who worries constantly about his daughter. He doesn't want her to be part of the team with the other sidekicks, despite working with all of their mentors in the Justice League. This appears to be contradictory, since presumably she's been trained by him; Zatanna clearly has a strong handle on her magical abilities by age 14, and she chooses a stage magician's outfit for her costume on her first outing with the team, which resembles her father's enough for Harm to recognize her as his apprentice. However, this training could have been something Zatanna herself pushed for, as she's shown to be willful even from the start. Zatanna quickly makes her presence known when she's first introduced to the team, as she realizes they're having a psychic conversation that the adults aren't included in—and neither is she. She points this out in front of everyone, and states she doesn't know if it's really cool or really rude. Then, when the team decides to go after their missing supervisor Red Tornado, Zatanna puts forth the suggestion that they kidnap her to prevent her from telling the Justice League about their intention to defy their orders. Later she blatantly says she uses a magic spell to sneak out of her room, again pointing to a typically rebellious nature—one that has gotten her in trouble, as she expects Zatara to ground her for life for running off (and is proven right, as Zatara promises Black Canary he will do just that). This mischievous streak extends beyond her father, however; when Zatanna, Conner, and M'gann are all bored when they are left behind on a mission, it's Zatanna who suggests they break into Red Tornado's apartment to see what he has up there. She's curious, since Red Tornado is an android who doesn't sleep, eat, or even change clothes. She enjoys having fun, and Zatanna doesn't mind breaking a few minor rules or violating a little privacy to that end. She's also sarcastic at times, which is again pretty common for a teenager. In terms of her own emotions, Zatanna also tries to be independent, waiting until she's alone to cry or trying to make an excuse for her tears by telling M'gann she's chopping onions.

Yet there is more to Zatanna than a teenager's desire for freedom; she's shown to be clever and caring, as well as confident. Though M'gann and Conner have attempted to keep their relationship secret from the team, Zatanna notices it early on after watching the pair's interactions. Only Kaldur and Robin have picked up on it before then, whereas Artemis and Wally are both in the dark. As mentioned, she realizes the team is having a psychic conversation when she first meets them because she's watching their silent interactions and expressions. And when they meet the mysterious girl who only says "Secret," Zatanna has an easier time thinking past her frustration to realize that the whole of her actions doesn't make her seem like an accomplice of Harm's, though she leads them to his house and stands next to him when he knocks her out. Though she isn't a genius in intellect, Zatanna is notably smart in this regard, and highly observant.

When it comes to the people around her, she's also caring. She and Artemis develop a strong bond after Zatanna inadvertently reveals Conner and M'gann's relationship, angering Artemis (who hadn't been aware, and also liked Conner). Instead of leaving Artemis on her own, she apologizes and suggests a girl's night instead of joining the others at their school's Halloween party. Later, as they go through the city stopping various petty crimes and after they defeat Harm, Zatanna tries to prompt Artemis to talk about what's on her mind. Artemis refuses both times, and Zatanna doesn't pry further, although she remains concerned. The one person Zatanna cares about most, however, is her father. Her desire to have him allow her more freedom in no way means she doesn't love him, and Zatanna is absolutely devastated when her father gives himself up to Dr. Fate so Zatanna won't remain possessed by Nabu. When Zatara takes the Helmet from her, Zatanna begs him not to, saying it's her fault. Zatara has given his word, however, and Zatanna falls to her knees in shock as she watches Fate take him. After this, Batman (who is asked by Zatara to take care of Zatanna), offers her the chance to move in with him. Zatanna refuses, however, saying that moving in with a new family would be like giving up on her father. (Please note that this is not shown in the series, but was revealed by the creators). In the weeks following, Zatanna has difficulty with both direct and indirect reminders of her father, from watching Dr. Fate's induction to the Justice League, to preparing Thanksgiving dinner without him. Two months after the loss, Zatanna even goes so far as to stay behind while the team proceeds on a mission so she can try to remove the Helmet with her magic, though she is unable to.

Zatanna is also fairly confident, particularly for a girl her age. On her first introduction to the team, she immediately makes her place with them; instead of standing back she takes an active role in their interrogation of Professor Ivo by using her magic to make him blurt out the location of Dr. Morrow. When Kaldur asks her to stay behind while the team confronts Red Tornado on that same mission, she asks if it's an order, heavily implying that she'll defy it if it is. When Kaldur says it's just advice, Zatanna immediately changes her outfit (via magic), making her intention of going with the team clear despite the fact that she doesn't know Red Tornado, while for everyone else it's a personal quest to find out why he's presumably betrayed them. Another notable way she's confident is with her sexuality; Robin is taken with Zatanna immediately, and begins flirting heavily with her. At one point, when he realizes what he's doing he apologizes, and Zatanna easily says she doesn't mind. For Robin's birthday she gives him a kiss on the cheek, which is the start of a tradition of birthday kisses (and at 19, she kisses him rather passionately for his birthday, despite the fact that they're exes and only friends at that point). In the season finale, Zatanna grabs Robin and physically pulls him into a kiss at the start of the New Year. However, Zatanna isn't completely brazen; when she, Conner, and M'gann find Red Tornado's "John Smith" android, Zatanna's comment is that he's cute, but he needs pants, which she proceeds to provide with a spell. She's also aware of her limitations, as she hesitates to try a new spell Zatara used previously to locate the source of a magical disturbance, stating she's not on her father's level.

Another thing of note is how easily Zatanna does use magic. It's a common part of her life, and definitely not limited to use on the battlefield (though it is her primary asset in that regard). In her appearances, she uses it for everything from costume changes to breaking into Red Tornado's apartment to seasoning a turkey, and this trend will no doubt continue in Luceti.

Though not revealed in the series itself, the creators of the show stated that Zatanna went to a Catholic school before losing her father, and with Zatara's Italian heritage, it is very likely that Zatanna is Catholic, though again, she's not shown to be devout or practicing in the tv show.

Abilities/Skills: In pure physical strength alone, Zatanna isn't specifically shown to be athletic. However, as part of the team she's very likely being trained by Black Canary, and when Harm throws his sword at her, Zatanna dodges the blade. Additionally, she's also able to keep up with Artemis when they're running from Harm, and her reflexes are good enough for Zatanna to see one of Harm's attacks coming and to knock Artemis out of the way. So it's safe to assume she does have combat training and prowess, even if this isn't her primary asset as a superhero.

That is magic, which to Zatanna comes easily and naturally. She's at least a second generation magician with a great deal of potential to grow. While there are limitations (which will be discussed below), it's heavily implied she can use magic to do just about anything within reason. In order to cast a spell, Zatanna must speak the command backwards and have the energy required to create the desired effect, as it's usually provided by the person using magic. During the course of the first season, she's shown using magic to do the following:

-Compel a person to blurt out information they are trying to withhold
-Change the clothes she and others are wearing, or alter those clothes (removing the heels from her boots), or to create new clothing out of cloth (pants out of a bed sheet)
-Create shields (potentially, as this was a spell she purposely failed at)
-Manipulate material to take on attributes it doesn't possess (causing smoke to become a solid blindfold) or to become something new entirely (transforms a henchman's gun into a snake, then into ropes)
-Create or untie restraints.
-Create illusions of other people. These illusions are intangible and disappear when they are struck.
-Control temperatures of objects (heating metal or freezing water around a person)
-Levitate herself, other people, or objects.
-Create explosions.
-Either reveal a hidden object, in this case the Helmet of Fate, which she presumably used magic to hide. The other theory is that she used magic to actually summon the Helmet to her from a distance, though it's not clear which is the case. It's possible she can do both.
-Season a turkey (yes, I'm serious)
-Open locked/sealed doors
-Manipulate weather in a localized area (specifically, Zatanna creates and dismisses a snowstorm when the team is trapped by use of shields. We also see Zatara summon lightning)
-Create a cloud of smoke to obscure vision.

Then there is magic she uses five years later, and has the potential to develop (or can possibly already do in some cases, but isn't shown)
-Create glamours which deceive the senses. This can be a spell she casts directly (done in the comics, which creates a bubble that prevents the team from being seen or heard), or on an object. Zatanna creates a glamour stone which changes the perceived appearance of the person wearing it.
-Create a hole in a force field (a spell which fails)
-Slow down an enemy's reaction time (a spell which fails)
-Possess a teammate to cast a spell through him.
-Reflect an enemy's spell against them.
-Reinforce the shield created by another teammate.
-Perform a ritual of summoning to access Isis's power (which seems to summon Isis into Zatanna, although Zatanna remains in control from all appearances. As a note, Zatanna herself states a spell of this magnitude required weeks to prepare).
-Taking down an enemy's force field.

Notably, Zatanna is never shown to be fatigued by casting magic at any point during the series. While she herself implies there is a limit, it is presumably pretty high. Zatanna also uses magic all the time, so it's safe to assume she gets a lot of practice with it. She uses her hands to seemingly direct the flow of the magic, and in one instance when trying a more difficult spell, employs a wand likely to help better focus. She can also detect mystical forces within a person or object, as is the case when Batman is infected with Starro-tech, which has mystical properties. She does not have to cast a spell in order to be able to sense mystical forces from a person close to her.

Her magic does have limitations, however. When asked if she can automatically teleport the team, or teleport someone else to a cell, or force enemies to surrender, Zatanna concludes the list by adding "create world peace." In general, it seems she can perform magic on a localized or small scale, affecting a specific area or a low number of people. Her magic can be resisted if a person has power or will enough of their own; Klarion even goes so far as to call Zatanna's spells "baby magic," and easily shrugs them off. She must be able to speak in order to cast her spells, so when Zatanna is gagged by Harm, she cannot use magic. Incantations that are interrupted also have no effect, as seen when Red Tornado knocks her out before she can create a shield. Zatanna also says that there is more to magic than just speaking the words, and she must be able to focus on new spells in order to cast them successfully. Additionally, she has to have the energy required to cast a spell. Though she can detect mystical forces, Zatanna doesn't appear to be able to detect if a person is a spirit; she doesn't realize Secret is a ghost until she and Artemis see her rising from her own grave.

As a note, there will be a permissions post on her journal regarding Zatanna's magical abilities, latent and especially intended.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
-Magic. This should be highlighted with rainbow glitter. Detailed above.
-Observant of behavior
-Studious when she has to be (usually relating to magic)
-Caring about others, both as a superhero/crime fighter and friend
-Some cooking abilities; she's Italian and presumably cooks a lot at home
-Bilingual which doesn't matter so much, but she speaks Italian and English fluently, along with some high school French.
-Some hand-to-hand combat abilities, but she's pretty on average here. As a superhero, her level could almost be considered a weakness.

Weaknesses:
-Physical combat, although again, she's average. It's her profession that makes it a weakness.
-Ongoing grief due to the loss of her father, including her guilt at being the cause of it.
-She's a teenager. She gets bored and mischevious.

Items: Just her clothes and her winning personality.

Trash planet. Or moon, whatever. Either way, that was a thing.

[A thing Zatanna will be happy to never do again, please. At least now the ship is sailing away from that particular foul experience.]

So is that as bad as things tend to get around here? Because I don't know about you, but I don't think an intergallactic, multi-dimensional, time-breaking side trip is somehow going to hit rock bottom by forcing everyone to play garbage man for a day. There's got to be something worse looming.

[Which means she should be prepared for it; no matter what the Captains expect her to do now that she's signed their contract, she's still going to put time into being a superhero too.]

Also important, just what does everyone do when they're not following orders? There's got to be something else around; otherwise everyone's just going to go stir crazy, and I am not looking to add boredom to the list of things I've had to endure here.

[Getting the garbage smell out of her clothes and her hair is plenty, thanks.]

Oh, and just in case: if anyone's around who knows about the Justice League or especially the Team? Get in touch. [Zatanna really wants to know who else is around. Not that having Conner and Superman isn't great, but it'd be nice to run into someone who both recognizes her and thinks she should actually be fourteen.]
